Jag blir riktigt sugen på att läsa boken, jag gillar idén att följa ett djur (ålen, torsken), en produkt (salt, kaffe), en växt (citron) en produkt genom historien och kulturen, och Gäddbibeln verkar riktigt läsvärd.
Hade jag varit streckarredaktör hade jag sagt till sagde Bergqvist: keep ’em coming. Som han skriver!

En doktorandtjänst är utlyst på Chalmers:
The Division of Science, Technology and Society (STS) at Chalmers University of Technology, will hire a PhD student in History of Technology, with a specialisation in industrial transformation in the 20th Century. Applicants are invited to propose their own research project within this specialisation. Possible topics might be the relationship between nation-states and business, industrial growth and de-growth, or development of certain technologies such as maritime technologies or energy infrastructure.

Idé- och lärdomshistoria, Uppsala, arrangerar årets Hans Rausingföreläsning. Lawrence M. Principe, Johns Hopkins University: ”Theory, Practice, and Demonstration in Medieval Alchemy: John of Rupescissa’s Alchemical Preparations for the Antichrist”:
The fourteenth-century Occitan Franciscan friar, alchemist, and prophet John of Rupescissa wrote two alchemical treatises, one on chrysopoeia (gold-making) and one on pharmaceutical medicine, both intended to help Christians survive the imminent arrival and persecutions of the antichrist. Although widely claimed to be derivative works that John compiled from literary sources while imprisoned by the Pope at Avignon, new critical editions of these works–together with modern laboratory reworkings of their processes–reveal John as a original theorist and an experienced practitioner. Indeed, his methodological principles stand in surprising contrast with contemporaneous Scholastic matter theory, and require a significant reevaluation of the operational principles and practices employed by Medieval alchemists. This lecture will describe John’s life, texts, and work, as well as their place in the broader history of chemistry.

Ett lektorat i mänskliga rättigheter är utlyst i Lund.
Ämnet mänskliga rättigheter är flervetenskapligt och anlägger historiska, filosofiska, etiska, rättsliga och politiska perspektiv på mänskliga rättigheter. I ämnet finns ett kandidatprogram med undervisning på svenska och ett tvåårigt masterprogram med undervisning på engelska. Söktrycket till utbildningarna är mycket högt. Här finns också Sveriges enda flervetenskapliga forskarutbildning i mänskliga rättigheter.
Forskningen är inriktad på mänskliga rättigheter som ett komplext samhällsfenomen. Fokus ligger på barn och ungdomar; minneskulturer; konflikt, våld och ansvarsutkrävande; rättighetsaktörer; politisk filosofi och filosofihistoria samt de mänskliga rättigheternas historieskrivning i modern tid.
”Mänskliga rättigheter i en polariserad värld” är ett av Lunds universitets fem profilområden. Detta innebär en kraftsamling av Lunds universitet på forskning, utbildning och samverkan inom det tvärvetenskapliga rättighetsfältet.

The Max Planck Society invites outstanding applicants to apply for tenure-track Lise Meitner Research Group Leader positions. The appointments will be made in partnership with suitable Max Planck Institutes according to the applicants’ research topics. With the Lise Meitner Excellence Program, the Max Planck Society expressly aims to attract and promote the careers of outstanding female scientists who are at an early stage of their scientific career and have a documented track record of independent and innovative research.
The successful candidates will be offered a Lise Meitner Research Group at a suitable Max Planck Institute for an initial period of six years plus one additional year for maternal leave. The funding package includes a W2 tenure-track position (equivalent to Assistant/Associate Professor), resources for scientific staff and running costs as well as a highly competitive start-up package. Upon successful tenure evaluation, four to five years after the start of the group, the W2 position and the financial support will be continued. Further career development is possible including consideration for a Max Planck Director position within the Max Planck Society.
The purpose of the Lise Meitner Excellence Program is to increase the number of outstanding female scientists in the Max Planck Society. Therefore, the program primarily focuses on the recruitment of outstanding female scientists, though it is open to all applicants (for details, see Lise Meitner Excellence Program: FAQs). Det här ser ju ut att vara tjänster med väldigt goda förutsättningar. Man undrar om någon humanist eller samhällsvetare från Sverige söker?
På vår grundkurs har vi inte återgått till den inledande salstentan som vi hade i början på första terminen. Under pandemirestriktionernas tid blev allt hemtentor, och så har det fortsatt.
Men en artikel av Anders Sundell får åtminstone mig att fundera över om det var så klokt att fortsätta med enbart hemtentor, även på kurser på grundnivå som inte är uppsatskurser. Han skriver om AI-mjukvara som skapar text:
Jag prövade att skriva in frågor från hemtentor som vi gett på statsvetenskapliga institutionen till [AI-modellen] GPT-3, och svaren som datorn producerade var inte märkbart sämre än det många studenter lämnar in. Att frågorna är relativt komplicerade, eller ställda på svenska, till exempel ”Hur ser förhållandet mellan den exekutiva och den lagstiftande makten ut i Sverige?” är inget hinder. Visst, svaren var kanske något platta och refererande, men det är å andra sidan inte onormalt i akademiska sammanhang. Vårt system för att upptäcka plagiat gav också grönt ljus. Texterna är nya.
Det är kanske läge att återgå till åtminstone någon eller några salstentor på grundkursen?

Arctic Dreams –
Histories Uncovering the Imagined, the Forgotten and the Hidden Arctic
Guest editors: Janina Priebe and Nina Wormbs
As the Arctic has moved from the margins to the centre of public discourse, we should re-visit its history. The connected Arctic is now at the centre of political and cultural debates about globalized trade and transport, climate change, energy transition, and transnational Indigenous rights movements. However, this renewed focus has not necessarily deepened our historical knowledge. Surfacing and dominant master narratives run the risk of concealing other broader, unexpected, and more complicated stories of the Arctic and overlook its rich and contradictory history.
We invite scholars to propose papers with historical perspectives on the Arctic, emerging from within or outside the Arctic itself. (Invited disciplines include, but are not limited to, the history of science and ideas, history of knowledge, history of technology, environmental history, STS, literature, anthropology, and media and cultural studies.) The contributions should revolve around how people, places, ideas, resources, cultures, or pasts in the Arctic, have been imagined, depicted, or described, and what has been forgotten or become hidden as a result. Empirical papers, or papers challenging established historiographical discourses, are welcome.

Relevent research fields may be science and technology studies, gender studies, sociology, anthropology or media studies. To celebrate its Founding President, Wolfson College in 2022 established a new stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship. The elected Fellow will, like Isaiah Berlin, have a broad interest in the global history of ideas, and philosophy. They will be expected to undertake independent research and play a full and active part in the life of the College. They will be given access to office space in College from which to work. The post brings with it no teaching obligations. Candidates should have received a doctorate as a condition of taking up the position, and should normally not have received their doctorate more than 5 years before appointment.
