The point is to develop a taxonomy of understandings and uses of ignorance, but also tools for understanding how and why diverse forms of knowledge do not or did not “come to be” or are delayed or neglected at different points in history.
För länge sen bloggade jag ett CFP på tematiken agnotology - the cultural production of ignorance, ett ämne som kanske känns minst lika eller mer relevant i delar av dagens värld än det där det-finns-lekmannaexpertis-lite-här-och-var-som-är-viktig som hörs här och där i STS. Under läsningen av Peter Galison, “Ten Problems in History and Philosophy of Science”, Isis vol. 99 (2008), 111-124 (ett ypperligt sätt att börja arbetsdagen, för övrigt) dyker begreppet och boken upp i ett intressant sammanhang:
we now face another kind of doubt, doubt raised for its own sake, doubt as a tool of political intervention, doubt marshaled to thwart scientific consensus, block political action, and protect quite specific interests

Nej, jag livebloggar inte från Teknik- och vetenskapshistoriska dagar 2008. Men jag har haft väldigt kul, massor av intryck och input. En konferens att rekommendera för alla med det minsta intresse för teknik- och vetenskapshistoria, sociala teknik- och vetenskapsstudier, vetenskapssociologi, medicinhistoria.
Open access-tidskriften Spontaneous Generations har precis debuterat. Den drivs av doktorander (men artikelförfattarna i första numret är i många fall definitivt inte doktorander). Jag vet inte om det är bra eller mindre bra för tidskriftens framtid.
Sen kan man ju undra över avsaknaden av trackbacks och annat sånt, för att knyta upp det hela till den diskussion som försiggår på Crooked timber och en massa andra ställen; en variant av inflödet på Arxiv hade väl varit något?

Abstract:
Do we live in a scientific world? At least since Max Weber in 1918 announced the “disenchantment” of the world, social and cultural commentators have insisted, or assumed, that we do. This lecture will assess some very substantial senses in which science is now the defining and most authoritative form of knowledge, and has been since perhaps the late nineteenth century. And it will point to a series of considerations which argue that we do not now, and never have, inhabited a scientific culture. Connections will be pointed out between this problematic state of affairs and the changing identity of the scientist in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

The theme of the meeting will be Connecting Disciplines.
