Missiler med hög precision som kliniskt dödar fienden och skonar civilbefolkningen är en vanlig bild i media, i detta liksom i flera tidigare krig. I det förra gulfkriget visade en grupp skeptiska forskare vid MIT, ledda av fysikerna George Lewis och Theodore Postol att Pentagons utsagor att Patriotmissilerna sköt ner så gott som alla irakiska Scudmissiler helt enkelt var fel. (Se exempelvis första kapitlet i Harry Collins och Trevor Pinch, The Golem at large: What you should know about technology (Cambridge, 1998; 2002).)
Nu försöker flera forskare utröna just hur precisa missilerna som träffar irakiska mål är och det visar sig inte vara speciellt enkelt. Pentagon har öppnat upp för journalister i fält men stänger ner andra informationskällor, som oberoende forskares tillgång till kommersiella satellitbilder (vilket man gjorde i Afghanistan 2001). En viktig källa blir nyhetsrapportering; Lewis och Postols grupp använde i sin analys av kriget 1991 videosekvenser från TV som underlag för ballistiska analyser som smulade sönder Pentagons påståenden om 96-procentig träffsäkerhet och man försöker göra samma sak den här gången. Och även om missilerna har hög träffsäkerhet rent tekniskt hänger det ju på underrättelsematerial och liknande att se till att man siktar på rätt mål. Att utröna hur pass bra detta fungerat i Irakkriget blir svårt, säger statsvetaren Barry Posen vid MIT till Nature.

Raytheon är en stor spelare i det amerikanska militärindustriella komplexet. De tillverkar till exempel Tomahawkmissiler, men vill nu bredda sig mot inhemsk säkerhet, som man ser som en expansiv marknad:

In June, the company took the next step, formally creating a new division based in Falls Church, Va., outside Washington, to oversee its domestic-security business.

Total information awareness-projektet stoppades men det finns andra tecken som tyder på att USA håller på att sluta sig, hävdar Dan Gillmor:
“Meanwhile, under cover of a war that has caused the news media to ignore other important news, the Bush administration issued an order that will guarantee the wrongful arrests or harassment of innocent people. The Justice Department told the FBI it no longer needed to worry about the accuracy of its National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database containing 39 million criminal records, including some documents that would barely pass the gossip hurdle. /…/
The Bush administration’s attitude, assisted by a Congress that long since abandoned any commitment to liberty, is that government has the right to know absolutely everything about you and that government can violate your fundamental rights with impunity as long as the cause is deemed worthy.
You, on the other hand, have absolutely no right to know what the government is doing in your name and with your money, unless the information is deemed harmless by people who have every motive to cover up misdeeds. Bush and his people have turned secrecy into a mantra, and too few people recognize the danger that poses to our freedoms, much less our pocketbooks.

Inte bara det som händer i Irak är intressant, utan även vad som händer med och i USA. Är USA på väg att sluta sig i sin kamp mot terrorismen och fundamentalismen? Ett inlägg på Warblogging.com hävdar det: “I don’t think we’re seeing a collapse of the American values of freedom, liberty and justice but I think we’re coming very close.”
