Partipolitik är inte the stuff that Det perfekta tomrummet is made of, men ett undantag kan man ju göra för centerpartiet och deras förslag att höja bensinskatten. Ett gott initiativ, men det spårar förstås ur mer eller mindre direkt: de vill kompensera för de som har långa resor till jobbet och därför höja skatteavdraget för de som sitter och puttrar i sina bilar på väg från Tunbjörkland till jobbet.
Det borde ju vara precis tvärtom. Politikerna borde istället införa ett skatteavdrag för de som bosätter sig i dyra innerstadslägenheter med cykelavstånd från jobbet och gångavstånd från centralstationen; innerstadslivet, där vi handlar i saluhallar och lokala affärer istället för köpcentra utkastade utanför städerna, flanerar och cyklar och inte äger bil utan åker kollektivtrafik, borde ju vara ett liv som gynnas miljöpolitiskt och skattetekniskt. Finansiera gärna ett urbanavdrag med rejält höjda bensinskatter.
Men en sådan urbanistisk princip är främmande för centerpartiet och förmodligen för många andra politiker i Sverige.

“Living properties: Making knowledge and controlling ownership in the history of biology” är titeln för en spännande workshop vid Max Planck-institutet för vetenskapshistoria 29-31 maj 2008, organiserad av Jean-Paul Gaudillière, Daniel Kevles och Hans-Jörg Rheinberger.
The history of intellectual property has drawn increasing attention in the history of science. A vast corpus of literature including histories of the political, economic, and legal frameworks of innovation, histories of particular technologies, histories of specific enterprises and their R&D investments have been accumulating in recent decades. This literature has addressed the development of the world’s patent systems and explored the existence of arrangements for intellectual property protection outside the patent system such as trade secrets. It has also provided valuable information on the norms and understanding of patenting activities associated with the production and commercialization of products ranging from mechanical devices to therapeutic methods. It has also demonstrated that forms of intellectual property are the product of fragile compromises that have radically changed through time. Ideas of intellectual property and how to protect it have been revealed as features of broad systems of political economy, closely connected to the production and appropriation of the product itself and expressing a variety of means of control, certification and valorization. These systems have promoted the establishment of boundaries between private and common goods that are both real and historically contested.

Läste Flyktkonsten. Fredrik Sjöberg har en egen stil, lite som om man hade blandat lika delar Peter Nilson (essäisten, inte romanförfattaren) med Klas Östergren (pre-Fattiga riddare). Fyndigt och rappt skriven, väver den samman nutid och dåtid, författaren med det historiska källmaterialet; man glufsar i sig den på en kväll.
Läste Vernon Bogdanors recension av Sheri Berman, The Primacy of Politics: Social Democracy and the Making of Europe’s Twentieth Century (Cambridge University Press) (TLS 13 juli). Ännu en i raden av böcker man vill läsa, helt klart.

In the mid-1990s an experiment investigating the acoustic tomography of ocean climate aspired to provide definitive proof of global warming. The experiment was stopped by environmentalists who thought it would harm marine mammals. The talk explores what the speaker terms the Cold-War Legacy and how oceanographers who built their science on US Navy support for studying the ocean as a theatre of warfare were not credible in their role as scientists studying the ocean as an environmental issue and an abode of life. The argument is based in part on comments collected during public hearings on the matter, which illustrate very clearly that the American public did not trust these scientists. Many believed that global warming was already proven, while others believed the scientists were simply opportunists seeking to advance their own careers, but the most damning critique was the accusation that the experiment to demonstrate global warming was simply a “cover story” to hide a secret military project.

Kombinationen Christopher Doyle - Wong Kar Wai har jag skrivit om tidigare. I morgon kan man, i den retrospektiv som kommit till tack vare Triangelfilms konkurs (vars yttersta orsaker man kan fundera över, givet de stödmiljoner filmindustrin får varje år), se 2046 på Kino. Ser jag fram emot.
